The TAR-4100L Automatic Recloser RCCB represents a significant advancement in earth leakage protection technology, addressing one of the most common challenges in electrical distribution: nuisance tripping caused by temporary earth leakage faults.

Traditional RCCBs trip and remain off until manually reset, potentially leaving critical systems without power for extended periods. The TAR-4100L solves this problem by integrating an intelligent automatic reclosing mechanism (REC) with a robust electromechanical RCCB, creating a device that can distinguish between temporary and persistent faults.

How It Works

When the RCCB detects a residual current exceeding 300mA, it trips to protect the circuit. The integrated REC mechanism then initiates an intelligent reclosing sequence, attempting to restore power after progressively longer delays. This staged approach allows temporary faults (such as moisture-related leakage that may dry out, or transient surges) to clear naturally while preventing immediate re-energization of circuits with persistent dangerous faults.

The 6-stage delay sequence (10s, 20s, 30s, 60s, 120s, 600s) provides increasing time intervals between reclosing attempts. If the fault persists through all six attempts, the device locks in the open position and requires manual reset, ensuring that persistent dangerous conditions are not repeatedly re-energized.

Key Benefits

Improved Power Continuity: Automatically restores power after temporary faults, reducing downtime and the need for manual intervention in remote or unmanned installations.

Maintained Safety Standards: Full compliance with IEC 61008-1 ensures that automatic reclosing does not compromise electrical safety or personnel protection.

Reduced Maintenance Calls: Eliminates many service calls for nuisance tripping, particularly valuable in remote installations like pump stations or outdoor equipment.

Intelligent Fault Management: Progressive delay sequence allows temporary faults to clear while preventing dangerous repeated reclosing on persistent faults.

Recloser (REC) Mechanism

The automatic reclosing mechanism operates on 220/240V AC at 50Hz with a power consumption of 30VA. The REC unit features toggle control and operates within 0.4 to 1.0 seconds of receiving a trip signal from the RCCB. The integrated auxiliary contact (1 NO + 1 NC) provides dry contact outputs rated for 250V / 2A, enabling remote monitoring, alarm signaling, or integration with building management systems.

RCCB Protection Characteristics

The electromechanical RCCB provides Type AC residual current protection with a rated sensitivity of 300mA (0.3A). This sensitivity level is optimized for equipment protection and fire prevention in circuits where higher leakage currents may occur during normal operation. The device is guaranteed not to trip at 0.5 × I∆n (150mA) and will reliably trip at the rated 300mA threshold.

With a rated breaking capacity (Im) of 500A and rated limited short-circuit current capability (Inc and I∆c) of 6kA, the TAR-4100L provides robust protection even under fault conditions. The 4-pole (3P+N) configuration ensures that the neutral is also switched, providing complete isolation when required.

Reclosing Logic

The reclosing program follows a sophisticated algorithm designed to balance power continuity with safety:

  1. Initial Trip: RCCB detects residual current ≥300mA and trips
  2. First Reclosing Attempt: After 10 seconds, REC closes the circuit
  3. Subsequent Attempts: If tripping reoccurs, delays increase progressively (20s, 30s, 60s, 120s, 600s)
  4. Lockout: After 6 unsuccessful attempts, device locks in open position
  5. Manual Reset: Operator intervention required to restart reclosing program

This intelligent sequence allows transient faults (moisture, temporary insulation breakdown, surge-induced leakage) to clear naturally while preventing repeated energization of circuits with persistent dangerous faults.

Environmental Performance

The TAR-4100L is engineered for demanding environmental conditions, operating reliably across a temperature range of -35°C to +70°C and in relative humidity up to 93%. This makes it suitable for installations in harsh climates, outdoor enclosures, and industrial environments where temperature and humidity fluctuations are common.

Installation & Dimensions

The device mounts on standard 35mm DIN rail and occupies 130mm of panel width (approximately 7.2 modules). With a height of 82mm and depth of 76mm, it fits within standard distribution board enclosures. The IP20 degree of protection is appropriate for indoor panel mounting where the device is protected from direct water ingress and solid objects larger than 12.5mm.
